The inspiration behind North Of The Gum is an appreciation of the place where I grew up and the effect that has had on shaping my values in life, and architecture. For me, a respect for the natural environment we are so blessed with in Australia is a huge driving force behind the way I design and is something as architects we have a huge role in protecting.

At North Of The Gum the design process is driven by an interrogation of the site and client brief to create a building that is highly responsive to its place and the people that use it.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land where we live and work and pay respect to elders past and present. The practice works on the lands of the Yugambeh and Bundjalung people.

North of The Gum is led by registered Architect Jacob Hough, who has experience working on award-winning residential projects in south east Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Jacob is a regular design tutor at Griffith University Architecture Faculty and the 2018 recipient of the Board Of Architects Prize .

Key projects include The Cottage, The Bunyip, Seaside House and Fingal House.
